Mistral Large 4 ("Le Chonk") is the open-weight release of Mistral AI's flagship multimodal mixture-of-experts model, published on Hugging Face and the Mistral API on October 29, 2026. Mistral describes it as an improved version of the October 6 Mistral Large 4 Preview with further reinforcement learning, and it is a separate checkpoint from that preview; the Mistral API serves it as mistral-large-4 (mistral-large-4-0), the alias the preview used. It accepts text and images, has a 1M-token context window and three reasoning efforts (low, medium and high, the default; low replaces the preview's none mode). The model card states about 1T total parameters with 49B active per token (52B including embeddings and output layers); exact counts are left unspecified because the announcement rounds the total and Artificial Analysis lists 1.05T. Weights ship as an FP8 checkpoint (plus an NVFP4 build) under the Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight license, a modified MIT license that requires a separate commercial license for model-as-a-service offerings.
